deputy involved shooting in hernando county. melanie michael is live in the enclave subdivision and what have you learned so far? >> reporter: hey, stacy, good afternoon to you. at this hour, this is what we're learning. we're in weeki wachee, a quiet is undivision where deputies, as you mentioned, from hernando county, are on the scene of a involved shooting. i want to show you here. the house is around the corner. you can't see it and we other video we want to share with you at this hour and this is a deputy involved shooting that started around 1 this afternoon when deputies from the hernando county sheriff's office were called out for a man who was having some short of a mental breakdown, a healthcare worker called 911 to let deputies know he needed assistance. a deputy and sergeant from hernando county showed up at the house. again, some of the details coming into in to us. we spoke with the she. when they went inside, they

him to a safe place mentally and that did not take place, and they did, in fact, according to the sheriff, shoot this man. he is deceased and he's in his 60s and we don't know anything about his family bass next of kin is being notified. the sheriff told us this is a delicate situation, one that is tragic within the neighborhood and his agency as well. >> and this is trying emotionally on several different levels. not only are you scared to death because you don't know what you're going if you're going into a person who may want to hurt themselves or whether you're going into a situation where the person may want to take someone with them, that is the first concern. the second concern is that you're going into a situation where you're trying to help somebody and it turns bad. i can tell you that that is the last thing in the world my people want to happen. >> reporter: and stacy, moments ago, again, i told you that we spoke with the sheriff. he tells us the reason that the sheriff and the reason the

very carefully is when that healthcare worker called 911, there were reports that guns were inside the house and that he wanted to hurt himself. and he is dead tonight and that investigation is going on. the sergeant and deputy are on paid administrative leave. fdle travelled to hernando county and they're on scene investigating the case with a lot offy gos and details. we'll get those for you as the newscast continues throughout the evening. >> and melanie michael, live for updates on news and between newscasts g to www.wfla.com. and right now, a state representative is concerned about health and safety issues because of sewer water being dumped into the bay and st. petersburg mayor has put up a video on youtube to explain the wastewater problem and as jeff patternson explains, he spoke with the former mayor who said this is a problem that never had have happened. >> reporter: the city of saint petersburg dumped more than 120

treated sewer water into the bay. and a former mayor is saying it shouldn't have ever happened. in a new youtube video, saint petersburg mayor explains that ageing and leaking pipes are putting too much water into saint pete's wastewater treatment system. forcing the city is to -- city to release sewage into the bay. >> and we're in the middle of a perfect storm. >> and he explains that in know .993% of the discharge is free of fecal bacteria and state representative cathleen peters is still concerned. >> and the usf said there is a superbacteria they found on the shorelines of saint petersburg. >> and he believes there are other issues going on. >> and this mayor doesn't have a pipe problem. he has a capacity problem. >> reporter: representative peters has called for a meeting of local officials to talk about methods to ensure this doesn't happen again jeff

>> and as we continue to fight the spread of zika around the bay area, it appears that residents are getting the messaging. the mosquito population is down in polk county, and that is compared to recent years. despite that number, residents calling mosquito control have dramatically increased. in 2014 and other in one month, they received -- and in one month, they received 101 calls and this nothing, 3 anthrax. the biggest -- standing water and drainage issues. first at 4, we're tracking the tropics and we want to go -- meteorologist julie phillips. >> and we are still tracking what is julia spinning off of the carolina coastline and it's currently a depression. it's been downgraded with the winds that have weakened. the bulk of the condecrease -- convection on the eastern side. max wins at 35 miles an hour is any moving to the east at 8

the week, this weekend, early next week. you noticed a circular track going. and our models are generally keeping it in the same area and not sure which way it will drifted. we'll stay off of the southeast coast as we head into early next week and not expected to strengthen much. we're watching some other areas in the tropics as well and we have tropical storm ian and this is staying in the central atlantic and will continue to move north and not causing problems for us watching tropical depression number 12. this recently moved off the coast of africa and generally tracking into the west. and you can see the max winds at 35 miles an hour and not expected to strengthen much the last few days and not facing the best environments and that is why it stays a tropical depression or weak tropical storm and we'll keep an eye on this as it approaches the caribbean and we're watching the tropics closely. it's peak hurricane season and

and typical we're seeing more storms this time of the year and we'll have more in the full forecast. stacy? a rare outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease infected nearly two dozen students at florida state university this week. the outbreak, which is reserved for daycare centers, is thought to be hurricane related. here's mike with more. >> reporter: university health officials say that there are fewer than 20 cases on campus and there was today and that i say it's not dangerous, they say it's not over. >> and we saw several cases the first day and then we saw more the second and yesterday, we had no new cases, which was good. today, we have had one new case. we're seeing it come and we expect it to spike again a little bit and we think the hurricane and no electricities led to this in terms of humid,

laundry. >> reporter: so, germs are very happy in these sorts of situations and it's nothing that is life-threatening. >> reporter: there is no cure for hand, foot, and mouth disease but time and that takes about a week. i'm mike vasc election inda. and i in saturdayerous county, four lost manatees are heading back home for the gulf. hurricane hermine left them stranded in a bond on the golf course and they woman over the course at the crystal river when it flooded a week ago. today, fish and florida wildlife officers and a lot of volunteers moved them home. and we're told that one of the rescued is the largest that fwc has seen and is believed to be more than 1400-pound says. -- pounds. and people are lining up for the new line of iphones. they hit stores tomorrow. even these people won't be able to get their hands on a couple of them. we'll explain why. next. >> and then new technology

. the toddler who died after being left in a hot truck in palm harbor, the father claims he forgot the boy was in the pickup. we wanted to know if there is a way to keep tragedies like these from happening to another family? here's 8 on your side's leslie lacy. >> reporter: we have experienced record heat this summer in the tampa nationwide 29 children have already died from heatstroke this year after being left in a vehicle. there are some companies both large and small working on ways to get parents to check the back seat. general motors and buick rolled out a 2017 vehicle that includes a rear seat reminder. >> you put something in, you close the door, you're going to get in the front seat. >> okay. >> and we'll start it out and you go somewhere, you reach

looking about a 40% chance of rain in the forecast. and that is typical. at this point, isolated activity on the radar and that is going to push inland throughout the evening hours and into the westerly flow and tracking heavy rain around greenfield and spotty showers up through hernando county. also, tracking some scattered storms around the lakeland area and into the north there and right near i-4 and some heavier rain east and as we head south, myiaka head and into high lands county. for the rest of the evening, due to the onshore flow, most of the showers are east of i- 75, wrapping up after sunset tonight and it will stay muggy overnight and we'll see lots of sunshine to start the day tomorrow and into the afternoon and evening hours, we'll start to see the showers and thunderstorms develop and calling for a typical 40% rainchance on friday and into

it moves north into the open atlantic and we're watching tropical depression number 12 and this is fairly recent and moved off of the coast of africa and continuing to head west and this is a look at julia. current winds at 35 miles per hour and into the east at 8 miles an hour. the track is interesting, though, and into this weekend. early next week, you can see a circular track. the models are not sure where it's going to go and that is going to hang out off of the southeast coast have imaginema -- going to have minimal impacts off of our weather and tropical depression 12 continues to track west into this weekend and into the start of next week. and it's not facing favorable conditions, though, for development and that is why it remains a tropical depression or weak tropical storm. and we're watching it for you. for us this evening at 9:00 p.m., and cloudy skies and inland spots.

going to stay warm with the light on-shore flow and when you wake up in the morning, we're in the upper sevens to start the day -- 70s and topping out near 40s tomorrow and a 40% is to remember chance. that is typical for us. and months on the radar and currently, the activity is spotty in nature and more showers and thunderstorms north of i-4 earlier and now that storms are isolated, you can see a few lingering showers and this is on the pasco-hernando counin showers los angeles and some heavier rain north of i-4 and over 75 and this is north of the brandon area is come tracking storms right around lakeland and they're beginning to wind down now. and spotty showers and storms in manatee county and into wachula and south of the viewing area now south of desoto county and keep the light westerly flow in place and pushing the rain east of i- 75 and know whereing up after

thank you very much for joining us tonight. we begin with breaking news right now. we are on the scene of a deadly deputy involved shooting in hernando county. let's get right to melanie michael live in the enclave subdivision. and melanie, what are you learning there? >> reporter: good afternoon jen. a man is dead in this neighborhood after deputies shot him 1:00 this afternoon. they were responding to a 911 call that this man was mentally instable in a house full when they got there, they tried to talk him down. tried to get him calm. instead, they had to shoot him. he is dead at this hour and neighbors are in shock. in this quiet weeki wachee neighborhood, no one realized one homeowner was in crisis. around 1:00, a healthcare worker at the home calmed 911 to tell the sheriff's office that the man was surrounded by guns inside his house and threatened to harm himself. a woman next door was told to go back inside her house.
